Albania is a land of mountains, rivers and lakes. Only to this triad could a fourth element be added, that of the natural landscape Albania, or rather, the caves. The Pirogoshi cave, which extends 1,500 meters, is the largest in the whole nation. It is located near Corovoda, a town famous for hosting another phenomenal natural attraction, the Osum Canyon, also called the Grand Canyon of Albania.
You will leave at 8:30 in the morning from Berat, to reach Polican in about half an hour. Here you will have a quick visit to one of the countries that are symbols of excellence of the communist era. Until the 1960s, Polican was a small rural center. Then the regime, with the help of Chinese industrial power, decided to convert the area to a large-scale weapon production. Soon a small country village became a city of over ten thousand inhabitants, most of whom engaged in the war industry. For this reason, the city of Polican still teems with forts and bunkers, which served to defend it.
You will get back in the car, reaching the prefecture of Skrapar in just over thirty minutes. This area is little known, but very popular with adventure lovers: in fact, nearby there are the rapids of the famous Gradeci Canyon. When you reach your destination, you will leave the vehicles and set off for a 20-minute walk to the entrance of the cave. Right from the opening you can have a taste of what awaits us, dip into an adventure that involves body and soul. Proceeding inside the cave, even the most claustrophobic will feel comfortable. On average, the cave has a height of 5 meters and a width of 30 meters. Inside the show is indescribable: stalactites, stalagmites, columns, petrified waterfalls, rock formations, ponds and hidden passages. The Pirogoshi cave is a real maze full of colors and exciting sounds. According to the ancient inhabitants of Skrapar, through this and other Albania caves in the area, man had access to a higher reality, to that otherwise inaccessible mystical world. The feeling that you experience when you enter the large rooms that open almost from nowhere is that of being in front of something sacred. The Pirogoshi Cave was initially explored by French and Dutch speleologists, but they were only the Italians of the Puglia Group Caves and the Speleological Group Dauno in 1995 to complete the exploration in its entirety.
Back in the open, you will dedicate yourselves to the Osum Canyon. You make the first stop at Qarkorja and Flamurit, a panoramic point that offers a real spectacle. Continuing between the canyon and the riverbed, you will encounter another cave, much smaller than the one just visited. These are Vrima e Nuses, a small cave often present in the tales and legends of the old people of Skrapar. In fact, it seems that a desperate young bride had fled here in search of shelter. The mountain that had heard her cry opened a small wound in her body made of rock, so that the girl could hide. The itinerary along the Osum river ends with a visit to the famous bridge of Zaberzan and the opportunity for everyone to take a bath.
