This Koman lake tour is the best way to enjoy the natural beauty of northern Albania. Its history is comparable to that of the famous Aswan Dam, built in Egypt in the late 1800s. Similarly, Lake Koman was created in the late 1970s by the construction of a dam in Fierza. In 1978, to obtain hydroelectric energy, the dam was built about fifty kilometers from Skutari that could show the strength of two rivers: the Drini i Zi and the Drini i Bardhe.
For over forty years, Lake Koman has become a very special part of the natural environment of this area. Here you can find dozens of species of fish, mollusks, crabs, birds and amphibians.
Our adventure starts early in the morning, at 6.30 am you will meet the guide to leave by car or minivan and head for Lake Koman. You will stop halfway for a coffee and arrive around 10 am at the shore of Lake Koman. Here you will get on a small boat, one of the twenty-seater motor boats used as a means of transport by the locals since the lake was created. Boating through the waters, you will find yourselves in a landscape made up of intense colors. The water is almost emerald green and the light warm colors of the rocks mix beautifully with the dark colors of the greenery. As you reach the edge of a stretch of water you will be able to see a myriad of small farms, villages consisting of three houses in the middle of the woods. Further on, the wonders of the Shala River await you, also known as the Thailand of Albania for its crystal clear waters and breathtaking natural beauty. Reaching the estuary of the Shala river, you are introduced to a naturally magical landscape, with the rock and the impervious peaks of the Albanian Alps as a backdrop to small sandy beaches or beaches of river pebbles. Here you can sunbathe, but be careful, the water flows directly from the mountain springs and it is freezing even in summer!
The Shala area is a good place for relaxation and dining. At lunchtime, a full meal awaits you in a local tavern, located in a wooden building near the water. After lunch, everyone has some free time to relax or explore the area until 3 pm, before returning on board to the pier on Lake Koman. Here where you will get back on our means of transport and enjoy the rest of the tour.
Lezhe, or Alessio, is one of the oldest cities in Albania. It was founded in 385 BC. from Dionisio of Syracuse. Here you can admire the ruins of castles and fortifications built by Illyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. in 1444 the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti known as Skanderbeg, founded the League of Lezhe, one of the first political-military formations organized by the Albanian people against the Ottoman empire. And in honor of the Skanderbeg, his mausoleum is placed on the ruins of a previous mosque and a church.
During the visit to the mausoleum of Skanderbeg you will discover the secrets of this place, erected in 1981 in the general's burial place, on the ruins of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. Inside, on the walls there are twenty-five pieces of armor to be seen each one tells of a specific chapter of the life and battles waged by Skanderbeg. But the highlights of the mausoleum are the patriot's sword and helmet.
