Gjirokaster is the “museum town” of Albania , which makes part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city is also known as the birthplace of the dictator Enver Hoxha, and the most popular Albanian writer – Ismail Kadare.
The area of Gjirokaster was inhabited from the Bronze Age and in the Midle Ages it became an important center. The old city walls and the fortress date back to the 3rd century, but first mentioned of the name of the town Argyrokastro was in 1336. Albanian nomadic groups appeared in this area too at the same time.
