Full Description

Finiq and Mesopotam tour from Saranda If you are looking for places to see from Saranda, you should definitely consider the Finiq archeological park, where the ruins of Phoenice are preserved, an ancient Greek site. Get on board with Mytour, discover Finiq and the monastery of Mesopotam.Finiq is a very popular destination with visitors who love Albanian ancient history and adventure. The site is a few kilometers from the coast, on a hill that rises almost three hundred meters above sea level. It is worth climbing to the top just to enjoy the exceptional panoramic view of the surroundings, from the Saranda plain to the lake of Butrint, connected to the sea by means of a natural canal. Then, you can see the Kaliasa River and in the distance the Mali Gjërë mountain range. The remains of ancient Antigonea, what to see Going up the hill, you discover why the Caoni, a Greek population from Epirus, decided to set up here in the fifth century BC. The position was strategic not only for control, but also for power management. At the highest point of the hill the acropolis was born, which housed the temple and the major public buildings. From here a system of fortifications was built to defend the site against attacks. Entering Finiq you will immerse yourselves in a true experience just as an archaeologist would. Approaching from the outside you can see three sections of walls, which correspond to many historical periods. The fortification walls of the city, the one relating to the expansion of the acropolis and the original walls, built around the acropolis. The first two walls date back to the 4th-3rd century BC. and they are clearly visible, given their thickness. They consist of huge blocks whose maximum thickness reaches 3.50 meters.During your guided tour you will then discover the remains of some of the most important buildings in Finiq. There is a small prostyle temple, a baptistery, a Byzantine church, a beautiful theater, several houses from the Hellenistic era and Roman water cisterns.Guided visit to Mesopotam A few kilometers away from Finiq you will have the possibility to visit Mesopotam, a small village known for the Orthodox Church of St. Michael, a real monastery in excellent condition. The church, built around 1224, was one of the largest in all ancient Albania. Today the simplicity of its external brick surface and its particular layout stands out. Inside, visitors will appreciate the cycles of frescoes with Byzantine icons, but also the Greek and Slavic inscriptions.
