The ancient and the modern Durres, the Roman amphitheater, one of the largest in the Balkans and the second largest commercial port in Albania. Kruje, the hometown of Skanderbeg, with its wonderful bazaar, Kruje castle and the best traditional food in the region.
Durres is a city with a wonderful view of the sea, the second most populous city in Albania after Tirana. Here is where the ruins of the ancient past blend together with a modern urban style. A Mediterranean city, full of light, and home to several important schools and universities. You can easily explore the city on foot and walk along the promenade and visit places of historical interest, such as the Venetian tower or the partisan statue, a memorial dedicated to resistance during the Second World War.
After meeting our guide, you will leave Tirana and head towards Durres. In about 40 minutes you will reach the archaeological area of Durres. The tour begins with a visit to the Roman amphitheater. Raised by the Emperor Trajan, in its heyday this site was projected to hold up to twenty thousand people. Leaving the amphitheater you will then head towards the Archaeological Museum.
Here is where you will see ancient history firsthand. The deepest layers of the archaeological site of old Dyrrhachium date back to the period of classical Greece. Durres was founded in the seventh century BC. by Greek colonists who came from the island of Corfu and Corinth. In the halls of the museum you will have the possibility to see up close unique finds. Your guide will tell you all about it, from the history of the first settlers, to Hellenism and the Roman Empire. This Durres guided tour is all you can ask for!
Once the visit is done, it is time to relax! Durres is a city full of clubs and attractions. You can stop for an aperitif or snack as well as breathe in the refreshing sea air. Or you can do some shopping in local stores. The only advice we will give you is not to eat too much here because of our next stop.In fact, we will then travel to visit Kruje, which is about 36 km from Durres. Here we will be served a good lunch based on local specialties. We are guests in a small restaurant that offers traditional Kruje food, homemade delicacies. All lovers of good food will appreciate the taste of the authentic flavors of Albanian cuisine.
An afternoon of history awaits you!. Kruje, founded by the ancient Illyrians, in the XII century AD became the capital of the first independent Albanian state. Kruje Castle dates back to that period, and you will be exploring it with your guided tour.
A few centuries later George Kastrioti Skanderbeg was born here, the patriot who was also the head of the anti-Ottoman resistance. The Ethnographic Museum, located inside the castle, is dedicated to him. Here you will find a series of documents and finds that trace the history of the many battles fought by the Albanian people.
After the visit to the museum, you will have free time to visit the ancient bazaar of Kruje, an open-air market where small artisan workshops and merchants are one after the other. Follow us on this Durres and Kruje guided tour!
