Berat is rated as the ninth-largest city in Albania by population. The city is the capital of the county with the same name, one of 12 constituent counties of the country. By air, it is 70 kilometers south of Tirana, 71 kilometers north of Gjirokastër, 70 kilometers west of Korçë, and 33 kilometers east of Fier. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 32,606.
Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, has a unique style of architecture with influences from several civilizations that lived centuries throughout history. Like many cities in Albania, Berat comprises an old fortified city full of churches and mosques painted with a grandiose wealth of visible murals and frescos. Berat is one of the main cultural centers of the country. If you are visiting the city of Berat there are some main spots that you should definitely see. The castle of Berat is one of these, the only castle in Albania where you will find still people living there. Inside the castle, you will find also Onufri Museum. The museum was named after the famous painter from Berat Onufri. More interesting spots in the city are Mangalem, Bulevardi Republika, Church of St. Mary of Vllaherna, Mosque in Berat, Dimal, and National Ethnographic Museum.
